England Seeded In World Cup Draw
England have been seeded by FIFA for the World Cup draw to be made on Friday. Fear was mounting in England that FIFA my try and exclude England as a top seed by once again changing the rules ahead of the World Cup Finals group draw this Friday.
However the FIFA organising committee announced the seeds on Wednesday based on October’s FIFA world rankings.
Along with England the following teams are also seeded: host country South Africa plus Brazil, Spain, Holland, Italy, Germany and Argentina. There will be four pots in the draw – one containing the top seeds, pot two with countries from Asia, Oceania and north/central America, the third pot with the five other African nations and three South American countries, and a fourth pot containing the other eight European countries.
Even though England are now seeded they could still end up in a nightmare scenario, a group with France or Portugal from the European pot, an Ivory Coast side boasting Didier Drogba and the USA, beaten finalists in the Confederations Cup last summer. On the flip side England could also end up in a group with Slovenia, Algeria and North Korea. We will just have to wait and see what the draw brings?
Pot 1 (seeds) South Africa, Brazil, Spain, Holland, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England.
Pot 2 Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Honduras.
Pot 3 Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay.
Pot 4 France, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia.
