Liverpool FC Match Odds

Liverpool FC was founded in 1892 by local tory MP and future Mayor of Liverpool John Houlding. Houlding owned land at Anfield and after a bitter dispute with Everton FC, who relocated to Goodison Park, the new Liverpool [ nickname, the Red's] team was formed. To this day Everton remain one of their greatest rivals along with the other world famous’ Reds’, Manchester United. The club quickly rose to the First Div and by 1946/7 had enjoyed great success winning the league title five times however by the 1953/4 season they had suffered relegation.

Bill Shankly was appointed manager in 1959 and this began a’ golden era’ for the club, they were back in the First Div by 1962. The winning partnership of Shankley and coach Bob Paisley saw Liverpool win League titles, FA cups, EUFA and European titles. Paisley took over as manager when Bill Shankly retired and during the nine seasons he was in charge Liverpool won 21 trophies including three European Cups.

In 1983 with new manager Joe Fagan at the helm Liverpool became the first English team to win three trophies in one season. 1985 saw Liverpool reach the final of the European Cup again but the event turned to tragedy when Liverpool fans breached a fence separating them from rival supporters and when a wall collapsed 39 fans were killed. The Heysel Stadium Disaster resulted in English clubs being banned from European competition for five years and Liverpool FC for six years.

Domestically and with player/manager Kenny Dalglish in charge Liverpool continued to dominate the league winning a further three Championships and two FA Cups including a Double title in 1985/6. In 1989 in the FA cup semi-final, tragedy struck again at Hillsborough, when due to overcrowding hundreds of Liverpool fans were crushed and 94 died on the day, the total eventually rising to 96. The disaster prompted a government review known as the ‘Taylor’ report, which resulted in all top division teams changing to all seater stadiums.

Since the Premier League was formed in 1992 Liverpool have retained their status as a domestic and European force, rarely finishing outside the top positions. In 2001 Liverpool won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup completing a Treble and providing the fans with more opportunities than ever to sing one of the best known football anthems in the world,’ You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
