The team was founded in 1882 as St Jude’s but in 1886 after merging with another local club became Queens Park Rangers. The club turned professional in 1889 and still play in their original colours of blue and white. They hold a League record for playing in almost 20 different grounds before settling at Loftus Rd, their current home, in 1917. Long standing rivalries with a number of other London clubs including Fulham, Chelsea and Brentford have provided fans with plenty of ‘derby’ games.
Q.P.R. (nickname The Hoops), enjoyed 4 seasons in the Second Div. before relegation in 1951/2 and then had to wait until 1966/7 to win the Third Div. championship. The 60s were one of their most successful periods and in 1967 they became the first Third Div. club to win the League Cup in the first League Cup final ever to be held at Wembley Stadium. In 1968 they were promoted to the First Div. for the first time in their history but were relegated after one season. By 1974 back in the First Div., they were beaten to the League title by 1 point.
The 1980/90s found Q.P.R. moving between Div.1 and Div.2 under a succession of managers and in 1992 finishing mid table, they became founder members of the Premier League. They enjoyed moderate success until 1995/6 when they were relegated and by 2001 Q.P.R. had sunk to the third tier. Despite returning to the 1st Div. in 2004 the club has suffered turmoil both on and off the field. Managers have come and gone with little success, financial hardships and scandals in the boardroom have dogged the club. In 2010/11 after leading the Championship for most of the season Q.P.R. have returned to the Premier League for the first time in 15 years.
