The 2012 Ryder Cup matches will take place between the 28/30th September 2012 at the Medinah Country Club, Illinois, USA. Europe will be the defending Cup holders in this 39th staging of the competition, in 2010 they beat the USA in a close run tournament by 14 1/2 points to 13 1/2.
This is the first time the competition will be staged at Medinah and in preparation the course has spent 1.5 Million USD on a greens renovation project on Course No3. The project has been led by golf course architect Rees Jones, it has included a fundamental re design of the 15th hole which has seen it's length reduced by 100 yards and a two acre lake has been added to the right side of the fairway. Eleven of the 18 greens have been renovated as well as the main putting green, all to USGA specifications. The course is no stranger to big golf competitions and has staged the US Open on three occasions, plus the PGA Championships twice, the last in 2006 when Tiger Woods won.
The Ryder Cup takes place every two years, it is a' match play' event with a total of 28 points to be won, 14 1/2 points are required to win the event, the defending Cup holders require 14 points to retain it. The first official Ryder Cup was held in 1927 In Worcester, Massachusetts and the Gold Ryder Cup trophy was donated from the other side of the ‘pond' by Samuel Ryder, a keen golfer and seed merchant from St Albans, Hertfordshire.
The 2012 Captains will be Davis Love III for the USA and Jose Maria Olazabal for Europe, neither Captains actually play in the competition and both are allowed four vice-captains to assist them.
The Americans have the better record in the competition, having won 428 times to the Europeans 321 victories, however having won in 2010 the Europeans will be loathe to return the Cup to American hands. Many of the worlds top players will be playing in the Ryder Cup Teams, always a hard fought and competitive tournament it should provide plenty of skills and thrills for the world wide audience it attracts. TV and Radio coverage of the event will be found on Sky Sports and BBC TV/Radio.
