Tiger Woods US Masters Golf

The 2013 USA Masters Golf Tournament will take place in Augusta between 11 – 14th April. The tournament was first staged in 1934 although it was then under the name the ‘Augusta National Invitation Tournament’ and was won in 4 under par, 284, by Horton Smith, it is now one of the four major tournaments known as Masters and hotly contested by professional golfers.

The winner of the tournament is traditionally presented with the much coveted Green Jacket, a tradition which began in 1949. Member of the prestigious club had started wearing the jacket in 1937 and the ‘Augusta Green’ jacket bore a logo on the chest pocket and also on the brass buttons. It became a symbol of membership of the exclusive club and is now presented to the winner as a member of the exclusive club of Masters Champions.

Tiger Woods became the youngest ever Masters Champion in 1997 aged 21, closely followed by the late, great Seve Ballesteros, who won the title in 1980 when he was 23 years old and Jack Nicklaus who at the same age won in 1963.

The winner of the tournament is presented with a trophy which is a replica of the Augusta National Golf Club, clubhouse, their name is engraved on a silver band surrounding the impressive trophy and they are given a replica to keep and receive a Gold Medal.

In 2012 the Augusta National Golf Club admitted women for the first time in it’s 80 year history – Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore, you may just have heard those names before!

The winner of the 2012 tournament was Bubba Watson of the USA, he received $1,440,000, in all the top 10 players earned more than $244,000 each. The 2013 tournament will feature most of the worlds top golfers, Tiger Woods, Rory Mcllroy, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, Matt Kuchar and Justin Rose will all be chasing that Green Jacket.
