Amy Murphy threw herself into the spotlight as a national hunt trainer last year with her hurdling superstar Kalashnikov, who was runner-up at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Instead of being happy and content with that, she wants more and that has taken her to buy her own stables in Newmarket, Southgate Stables. The deal to buy the stables from former Champion jockey Willie Carson will see Murphy move from having 35 stabling boxes to having 60, giving her the ability to double her string, something she seems intent on doing.

At 26, Murphy is the youngest trainer in all of Newmarket on both codes, and this is an exciting opportunity for her to move her career onto the next level and become a well-known name to racing fans. After seeing what she did with Kalashnikov last season in the big races, many people will be looking at her as a trainer they should side with, and it seems certain she will have had owners ringing her up on the back of this news. Finding horses to fill those additional boxes she has just bought shouldn’t be too much of a problem, and with the opportunity to buy from the various sales over the summer, she could find herself in a great position when the national hunt season returns in the autumn.

After serving her apprenticeship as assistant to Luca Cumani, Murphy decided to go it alone. She is a dual-purpose trainer with runners under both codes, although her biggest successes have so far been on the national hunt scene. With a stable star in Kalashnikov, she has been able to show her talents off on the biggest Saturday stage with him, something that is vital for young, up and coming trainers to do. That has given her the exposure she needs to get a leg up to the next level. People will have noticed her talents and what she has done with that horse, and they will be more than happy to send her horses in the hope she can work her magic again.

I expect to see Amy Murphy even more prominently over the next 12 months as she fills the boxes and has a bigger string to go to war with. However, in a couple of years, after she has impressed, even more, that could really be the time to watch her. There is no doubt that she has the ability to go to the top of the game, and after filling the 60 boxes she has, it is time for her to begin her quest to reach the top of the national hunt game.

Most people out there will have heard of Amy Murphy, whether it is because of Kalashnikov or something else. However, over the next 12 months you are probably going to hear a lot more about her and the horses she has under her wing in Newmarket.
