Kathy Liebert - Poker Legend

Like many people around the world, I watched Kathy Liebert take victory earlier this year (2005) in Poker Royale: Battle of the Sexes, out-witting and out-playing her fellow male and female contestants to take first place, $100,000 and international recognition. And, most astonishingly, she seemed to it without batting an eyelid – one cool, collected lady.

Long before this attention-generating victory, Liebert had proved that she could play in the top echelon of poker, competing against the best in the game – not any easy achievement as one of only a few top female professionals.

A pioneer in the field of poker, Liebert became the first woman ever to win a poker tournament with a buy-in of $5,000 or more and the first woman to win $1 million in tournament poker at the inaugural PartyPoker.com Million in 2002. After two second place finishes at the WSOP and many other final table appearances, Liebert finally won her first WSOP bracelet this past year capturing the $1,500 Hold’em Shoot Out Event at the 2004 World Series and a $110,180 payday.

Her no-nonsense approach to the game and her professional, business like demeanor has ensured that Liebert continues to climb the ever growing ranks of pro poker, ranking third for women on the all time money list at the World Series.

A previous Business Analyst for Dun & Bradstreet, Liebert grew tired of the corporate world and on the advice of her mother left her job and headed off to search for a more fulfilling career, taking her to Vegas where she played her first hand of poker. After learning the basics, playing in nickel and dime tournaments and reading everything she could about the game, she entered her first tournament and the rest is history.
