Poker Movies - Poker on the Silver Screen

Nearly a hundred years ago they were making movies about the game we all know and love so well - Poker! Over that time virtually everybody has had a go at trying to create legendary poker scenes but only a handful has managed to do it really well.

Here are some of the top poker movies of all time...

The Cincinnati Kid (1965)

It's New Orleans and a new kid has come to town to beat the notorious Lancey Howard (Edward Robinson), the best poker player in the country. With the help of an old friend and card dealer, Eric Stoner (Steve McQueen) manages to get in on the highest stakes game of his life.

If you can sit through romance and revenge blurb in this movie then you'll be in for one hell of a poker treat!

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

Four London working class stiffs pool their money to put one in a high stakes card game, but things go wrong and they end up owing half a million pounds and having one week to come up with the cash.

One of the best poker scenes ever filmed is in this movie - remember the room spinning around Nick Moran when he realises he's beat?? I'd be sick too!

Rounders (1998)

Having lost his tuition money and everything else he has saved in a high stakes poker game (Matt Damon) has learnt his lesson (he thinks) as he vows to his girl friend to give up playing forever. That lasts until his best friend (Edward Norton), a notorious card shark, is released from prison and drags him back into the circuit to pay debts he has incurred to a Russian mobster.

Great poker movie with some brilliant one-liners and though a little more Hollywood than real life, it really does capture the game and all its addictive nuances.

The Sting (1973)

When a mutual friend is killed by a mob boss, two con men, one experienced and one young try to get even by pulling off the big con on the mob boss. The story unfolds with several twists and last minute alterations.

Paul Newman and Robert Redford shone in this '73 classic which laid down the gauntlet for other movies of its genre with a resounding 'Follow that', sadly, though many have tried few have succeeded. The Sting is a real piece of movie artistry and a must for all poker buffs.

Kaleidoscope (1966)

Beatty doctors the plates that print the cards used by the major casinos of the world but after these cards go into circulation he goes on the rush to end all rushes playing blackjack and poker. Unfortunately he's forced into a head-up no-limit game and the cards have been switched forcing him to play using only his wits.

Definitely one to be checked out. Great plot with twists and turns to keep you more than interested for the duration of the movie. This movie has some iconic poker scenes and is featured regularly in most people's top poker movies.
