Odds can sometimes seem confusing to the novice so if you are one of those people who struggle to make sense of the bookmakers odds then my short guide might help you. In theory odds represent the probability of an event occurring. Let's say there are 40 horses in this years Grand National Race - Hypothetically any 1 of the 40 horses could win the race, so the odds on each individual horses should be 40-1.
If you bet £1 on a horse to win the national and it comes in first you would win £40 back from the bookmaker, plus your original £1 stake making a total of £41 winnings. But in reality the horses will not all be priced at odds of 40-1 because some of the horse in the race are known to be better jumpers than others.
The odds on the horses that are good jumpers will be reduced from 40-1 to maybe 10-1 as it is far more likely that a horse which jumps well will win the Grand National. If you backed a horse to win at odds of 10-1 you would get back £10 for every £1 you bet.
So lets say you bet £3.50 on a horse at 10-1 you could expect to win £35.00 plus your £3.50 stake making a total of £38.50. Basically, the better chance a horse has of winning a race the lower the odds will be. In the Grand National it is unlikely you will see a horse with odds lower than 8-1 due to the tough nature of this race.
