Grand National Tips 2008

Here are my tip selections for the 2008 Grand National:

I've selected Butler's Cabin for the big win. It's really fancied in the racing world, won the 2007 Irish grand National, has already had it's odds cut from 20/1 to 16/1 and are now at 14/1, owned by JP McManus, trained by Jonjo O'Neil and the jockey is Tony McCoy - need I say anymore!

Another JP McManus horse in serious contention is King Johns Castle, currently at 16/1, down from 20/1 which was down from 40/1. Nine years old, Irish and with four 2nd place finishes from his last six races. It will be ridden by Paul Carberry and great when carrying weight so the assumption is even better with less of it.

The line-up appears to be complete but the vast number of entrants will be whittled down to 40 before the big day. At this point, when the final runners are announced we will be back with more tips!

Here are a few tips to consider when picking a winner in the Grand National; the weight a horse carries is critical to Grand National Success. Hedgehunter became the first winner since Corbiere to carry over 11st to victory. A pound here or there over 11st should not be a major worry but do not bet on a horse to win carrying over 11st 3lbs. The simple fact is only one other horse in history has managed to win with that kind of weight and that horse was Red Rum!

Stamina is the second major factor. The Grand National is a grueling race for any horse but only those with experience winning at over 3 miles can be expected to be in the running at the end of this race. So don't throw money away on two and half milers.

Age of the horse is important too as experience counts for much in the National. Horses aged ten years and older are preferred. Ten out of the last 16 winners were aged ten or above. Nine year olds have had a few win too but don't back any seven year olds, it's been 66 years since a seven year old won and few even finish the course!

Finally, forget those French bred horses, regardless of what people may say they just can't go the distance in this race.

Summary:

Between 10st - 11st (no heavier)

Stamina - has the horse previously finished/won a 3 mile race

9-11 years old

Irish bred horse - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in 2007 were all Irish
