The closing date for entries into the 2010 Grand National was yesterday and today it was revealed that there have been 112 entries submitted including some very exciting prospects such as Tricky Trickster, State of Play, Comply or Die, Taranis, Vic Venturi and the much hyped Seven Is My Number.

This is how it’s going to work. The Grand National is a Class 1, Grade 3 race over four miles and four furlongs that is open to six year olds and upwards which are allotted a rating of 110 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 14, 2010. The race is going to be run on Saturday April 10th 2010 at 4.15pm at Aintree with a £925,000 total Prize Fund.

The weights will be revealed February 16 with the maximum allocated weight being 11st 10lb. The first scratchings have a deadline of March 2nd, the second scratchings deadline is March 23rd and the five/six-day confirmation stage will be April 5th with final declarations to be announced at 10.00am, April 8.

Below is the full list of all 112 entries and their odds with Paddy Power Bookmakers. They are still ante-post given the huge list and only when the weights are declared in two weeks will we really be able to indicate who is most likely to run on the day.

Barry Geraghty has already been lucky enough to experience what it’s like to win a Grand National when we achieved this much coveted feat winning on Monty’s Pass in 2003. He ran a great race and was always in contention from the outset but ran so strongly that he could afford to take his mind off the winning post long enough to look over his shoulder on the run-in before winning by 12 lengths ahead of Supreme Glory and Amberleigh House.

This was part of an incredible winning streak for Geraghty who only three weeks earlier had been the winning jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with five wins. In between the two meetings he had alos come fifth in the Midlands National at Uttoexeter which might not sound fantastic until you realise that his saddle had slipped and he rode bareback over the last three fences!

And then, the day before the National, he won the £46,000 Martell Cognac Sefton Novices Hurdle on Iris’s Gift, trained by Jonjo O’Neill which has to be considered a pretty impressive week by any jockeys standards!

The Geraghty family have been involved with horse racing for generations, his father being the renowned horse dealer ‘Tucker’ Geraghty and his brothers Ross and Norman are also jockeys. Geraghty was apprenticed to Noel Meade at Castetown, in his home town of Meath, at the age of 17 and rode his first winner under Rules, Stagalier at Down Royal. It took only three years for him to became the Irish Champion Jump Jockey for the first time.

His first Grand National appearance was in 2000 on Call it a Day but the horse was not on good form and he went off at 50-1, while Geraghty’s great friend and rival Ruby Walsh rode Papillon, a 10-1 chance. Walsh won, while Geraghty came a respectable sixth.

He won in 2003 and rode Monty’s Pass again in 2004 but came in 4th and again in 2005 finishing 16th. Under Martin Pipe he rode Puntal in 2006 and finished 6th, came 3rd in 2007 on Slim Pickings, 4th in 2008 on the same horse and in 2009 partnered with Golden Flight but fell at the first fence!

Over all he has had quite an astounding record at the Grand National so 2010 shouldn’t be any different. If he gets a good horse with suitable conditions he could be in for his second victory…

For all of the ante-post odds for the Grand National 2010 just check out Paddy power Bookmakers.

He tried to repeat his success by pairing up with Amberleigh House again in 2005 and 2006 but was unsuccessful.

The Irish jockey who hails from Galway had no horse racing background but was drawn to the sport as a result of living so close to the Galway racecourse. Surprisingly the initial obstacle in his career was the opposite of most jockeys in that he needed to gain weight rather than lose it, and so adopted a high-protein diet in order to build himself up for National Hunt racing to a weight of nine stone ten pounds.

His first winner was Blushing Pearl in Navan in 1992 but it was almost a full decade before he achieved any notable victories. In the 2003 season he went ten weeks without a single winner and things were not looking good, when suddenly he started a winning streak including a four-timer at Wetherby.

He won no fewer than 94 wins from 625 rides, earning £1,356,423 in prize money and reaching third place in the jockey’s championship.

Like most excellent jockeys, he will be in demand for the 2010 Grand National again so keep an eye out for the trainer and horse he pairs with because in 2009 he rode Kilbeggan Blade who had a really good chance but unfortunately pulled up at fence 21.

Always the bridesmaid and never the bride is how some people look at A.P. McCoy when it comes to the Aintree Grand National. If he rides again in April 2010, which no doubt he will, it will be his ninth attempt at a much coveted win and one that absolutely nobody could ever begrudge him. He himself has said ‘I suppose some people may regard me as a failure unless I win a National – I might even do so myself’, to which Carl Llewllyn, a twice National winner added ‘And then he’ll consider himself a failure if he doesn’t win two Nationals’.

All joking aside, Tony ‘A.P’ McCoy of Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland is officially the best jump jockey of all time. And how does somebody achieve a title like that? On 27th of August 2002 when victory on Mighty Montefalco in a three mile hurdle at Uttoxeter gave him his 1,700th winner, passing the three year old record total of Richard Dunwoody. But he did it at the young age of just 28 meaning that he has set a standard that is unlikely to ever be surpassed. His first victory came with ‘Legal Steps’, at Thurles in March 1992, and this initial success in Ireland led to him racing in England. Since getting his British licence, and winning his first race in Exeter in 1994, he has broken many records, including a record 74 winners in 2004. The following season he was a champion jockey, which he managed to replicate in the following 12 seasons, during which time he also became the fastest jockey to reach the 1000 winner mark.

It has been five years since he made the difficult decision to transfer to Jackdaws Castle, the state-of-the-art yard of trainer Jonjo O Neill and his landlord J.P. McManus, for whom he has continued to add to their list of victories. A.P McCoy has won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and King George VI Chase McCoy and has very few ambitions to achieve – except to ride 300 winners in a season and to win the Grand National.

He is on form at the moment which is evidenced by the fact that he won the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Witchita Lineman for JP back in March 2009, so who will he ride for the 2010 Grand National? It’s too early to tell yet as the list of entrants hasn’t been announced but there are some terrific Jonjo O’Neill horses to pick from and no doubt we’ll see A.P. in the famous gold and green hoops of Mr. McManus when April 10th 2010 rolls around!
