This weekend’s Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot is the big one that everybody has their eye on given that it’s generally a fore runner for the Cheltenham Festival Queen Mother Chase in March. Though the number of declared horses has dropped further to only eight entrants, Petit Robin is up there with the favourites and it’s Tony McCoy who has been booked to ride him in the race.

Usually stable jockey Barry Geraghty would ride him as he has done for his last five outings but he is already committed at Haydock so trainer Nicky Henderson has turned to the champion jockey McCoy to take the ride in his place.

Petit Robin is second favourite at 9/4 for the VC Chase and 10/1 for the Queen Mother Chase. Odds with Paddy Power Bookmakers are no longer ante-post and they also have a great offer on the race – If you take the current price and the Starting Price (SP) on your selection is greater, they will pay you at the greater SP. Heineken Cup Round 6 Fixtures

With only two teams definitely through to the Quarter Finals of the 2010 Heineken Cup there’s still all to play for this weekend for the remaining teams. Although some teams are so close to a place they can touch, nothing is guaranteed and depending on who comes out fighting there could be some major upsets on the cards.

In Pool 1 Munster currently top the group but with a comprehensive win over the weekend under their belts, Northampton are hot on their heels and its now up to Munster to stop them in their tracks when they play each other again in Thomond Park on Friday evening if they want to qualify as group winners. In Pool 2 Biarritz have already qualified and its unlikely that a second best qualifying place will go to that group.

Still all to play for in Pool 3 with any of three teams potentially topping the group – its all to play for as Leicester, Ospreys and Clermont Auvergne battle it out on Saturday. Pool 4 is still up for grabs because if Ulster beat Bath with a bonus point and Stade Francais lose to Edinburgh a big upset could be on the cards for the french team as Ulster would go through and Stade’s current 17 points may not be enough to secure a much coveted place in the next round.

Pool 5 already has a qualifier in Toulouse but its results elsewhere that will ultimately determine the fate of either Sale or Cardiff Blues should they still be in with a best runner up spot.
And in Pool 6 Leinster look the most likely to qualify top but London Irish are at home to them on Saturday and could cause serious heart break for the current European Champions if they were to beat them.

Scheduled for Saturday, 23rd January at 2.40pm at Ascot, the Victor Chandler Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt chase which is open to horses aged five-years-old or above. It is run over 2 miles and 1 furlong with thirteen fences to be jumped.

The biggest thing to know about this race is that it generally leads very nicely into the Queen Mother Chase at the Cheltenham festival so this is where we get to see how the horses really perform up against each other and make some better educated guesses on who really has a shot at the big prize in March.

Three horses have won both races in the same season – Viking Flagship (1994), Call Equiname (1999) and Master Minded (2009) and this year, although there are only 10 contenders for the VC Chase, seven of them have been registered for the Queen Mother Chase so this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Master Minded For Queen Mother Chase

One of the most popular champion chases of the Cheltenham Festival, the Queen Mother Chase always attracts the big guns, not surprising given the £320,000 payout for the winner and this year sees Master Minded heading the field of 24 contenders in a bid to pick up a hat-trick of wins for trainer Paul Nicholls.

Paddy Power Bookmakers have priced him, ante-post, at 6/4, which to be honest is pretty poor odds for a race that is still months away but such is his pedigree that it’s already anticipated that he’ll run away with the coveted title.

Nicholls also has four more entries up his sleeve including Free World, I’msingintheblues, Takeroc and Twist Magic who has the shortest odds of those four at 8/1. But the race isn’t just about Nicholls and his seemingly endless capacity to win major races.

Also in the running is Voy Por Ustedes from Alan King who has hedged his bets by entering him in the Ryanair Chase as well so it’s up in the air as to which he will eventually enter. Celebrity Big Brother 2010 Odds

Okay, so I use the term ‘Celebrity’ very loosely when referring to this years crop of Z list has-beens who’ve turned up at the Celebrity Big Brother house for the final celeb version of the show and though I would rather poke my eyes out than watch it myself, it does draw in the TV viewers many of whom might even go so far as to put a couple of quid on their fav celeb.

So despite my reluctance to even mention the show here, I must concede that it’s my job to provide our lovely visitors with all the info they want and need…

Some of the fab bunch of 12 this year who will be staying in the house courtesy of Channel 4 include Vinny Jones, Ivana Trump, Stephen Baldwin, Basshunter and Sisqo. I know, I know – how on earth could I possibly not be delirious with excitement at the prospect of giving my evenings over to them every night?? Anyway, I think you get the picture so without labouring the point any further I’ll just give you the odds that you need should you fancy sticking a few quid on who you think will win it outright.

Vidic Out For Another Week

Despite the weather Manchester United managed to still make it to Birmingham on Saturday in one of only two games that hadn’t been postponed in the Premier League. A disappointing 1-1 draw followed and despite being able to field a fully fit back four, Ferguson had to make do without Nemanja Vidic who is still injured and out for, what looks like, another week.

The Serbian visited a specialist on Wednesday last for a full diagnosis of the nerve problem down the side of his right leg which ruled him out of the FA Cup defeat to Leeds. However, the injury isn’t considered serious and he could return for the Carling Cup semi-final, first leg tie at Manchester City on 19 January.

Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson explained “During the warm-up against Leeds, he felt a problem in the nerve, it’s something which has been a recent problem for him and he just didn’t feel confident enough to play. I understand that because it’s painful. We sent him to a specialist to get the problem diagnosed and we know what exercises he needs to do now. It’s not a long-term issue and we can control it.”

Manchester United fans are hoping that he returns sooner rather later as the defense appears to need to some serious boosting with Van der Sar and Ferdinand still out which didn’t help in the FA Cup when they went out to Leeds and the subsequent draw against Birmingham which saw them drop very valuable points.

Manchester United are currently at 9/4 odds with Paddy Power Bookmakers to win the Premier League outright, second to Chelsea at 10/11 who are favourites at the moment.

It may a couple of weeks away but with the chaotic weather taking it’s toll on the upcoming race meets it doesn’t look like anything even remotely interesting will be happening on the horse racing circuit for a while so I’ve decided to jump ahead and give the low-down on the Victor Chandler Chase which takes place at Ascot on Saturday 23rd January at 14.35 – of course I’m hoping that the snow, frost and ice will have cleared by then!

The chase is a Grade 1, 2 mile 1 furlong race over 13 fences and this year we could be on for one hell of a race as some of the top horses in this field go head to head for the title. And it’s not just about the horses, the trainers, jockeys and owners are also up against it with Paul Nicholls looking to continue his incredible winning form, David Pipe trying to usurp him, Nicky Henderson hoping to cause an upset and the Goat Racing Syndicate crossing their fingers that all of them will fail and they’ll scoop the winning prize!

Looking back over the last couple of years I think it’s going to come down to a mini battle between 2008 winning trainer David Pipe who took it home with Tamarinbleu and Paul Nicholls who’s Master Minded romped home last year under Ruby Walsh so what are their prospects like this January?

Well, Paul Nicholls goes in as favourite with Twist Magic (6F1-31), followed by Nicky Henderson with Petit Robin (2237-1) and then David Pipe’s offering of Well Chief (/2-132), the oldest of the three horses. Forpadydeplasterer (21-222) is coming up quickly behind them as fourth ante-post favourite and then there’s a bit of a gap to the rest of the field so basically the bookies think there are only four horses in it – at least at the moment….

It may be nearing the end of 2009 but there’s still life in the year yet and non more such than at Kempton today at 3.05pm when the 3 mile King George VI Chase (GRADE 1) takes place and Kauto Star launches his historic bid to win it for the fourth time.

The only other horse to even come close to such an achievement was Desert Orchid who won it three times but even he couldn’t manage to get a fourth under his belt so can Kauto Star do it?

Paddy Power Bookmakers have him at 4/7 with his nearest rival, Imperial Commander, at 13/2. He’s been paired with Ruby Walsh, who is quoted in Racing Post as saying “It is an incredible feat by the horse and a credit to his durability and consistency that he is going back to Kempton to have a go at winning a fourth King George and making history. What more can I say? He’s a wonderful horse and, hopefully, he will bring it off.”

His trainer Paul Nicholls is on the roll of a lifetime and word from his yeard is that Kauto Star is in fantastic form. One thing is for sure, the whole country will be glued to their tv’s today to see if Kauto Star really can pull of this feat of a lifetime and gallop right into the history books!

X Factor Final Odds

And then there were three! How fast they’ve been whittled down over the last few weeks, seems like only yesterday I was laughing hysterically at the saddo’s and disillusioned during the audition process!

Well, that’s neither here nor there anymore as we are left with Joe McElderry, Stacey Soloman and Olly Murs to battle it out on Saturday night for the coveted title of X Factor Winner 2009, which of course comes with an almost guaranteed Christmas number one….

Nicholls Favourite for Boylesports Gold Cup

Anyone who even has a remote interest in horse racing will know that Paul Nicholls is on the winning streak of his life with winners coming out of his stables every weekend.

This apparently hasn’t escaped the attention of the bookmakers who have revised their decision to make Atouchbetweenacara favourite and instead have bumped two of Nicholls three entrants into first and second ante-post favs for the Boylesports Gold Cup at Cheltenham tomorrow.

Poquelin is now the favourite with odds on Paddy Power Bookmakers of 5/1, with Chapoturgeon a close second on 11/2 with Atouchbetweenacara falling to third on 6/1. The question is can Paul Nicholls keep up his amazing sequence of Saturday stunners tomorrow?

Boylesports Gold Cup 12th December

Another big race coming up this weekend so get your form books out and have a look at some of the contenders! Taking place at Cheltenham on Saturday at 2.25pm, the Boylesports Gold Cup is a Grade 3 handicap chase with a significant prize pot of £150,000, which is definitely not to be sniffed at and so far there are 17 entrants ready to line-up for it.

Currently the ante-post favourite across all of the bookmakers is Atouchbetweenacara who has been partnered with Barry Geraghty. The Irish eight year old is trained by Tim Vaughan and is currently at 5/1 with Paddy Power Bookmakers.

Nicholls Reigns Supreme at Tingle Creek

For his fifth successive year Paul Nicholls, one of the greatest trainers in the UK, has once again won the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown, despite been left without his shoe-in favourite Master Minded. Twist Magic sailed passed the winning post under a masterclass ride from Ruby Walsh at Sandown on Saturday

Anybody who thought Big Zeb and Well Chief might have put some fight would have been sadly disappointed as Twist Magic produced an awesome round of jumping that had his rivals in deep trouble a long way from the finishing posts. In fact, the only horse to actually try to contend for the title was Irish bred Forpadydeplasterer but even he could only succumb to a distant second on the day.

Nicholls said afterward “That was his very best performance, it was a very good run first time out at Exeter and he was awesome today. He goes out on his own at home because he’s a bit of a monkey but that was good and, tactically, it was a brilliant ride. Ruby didn’t get enough credit for his ride on Denman, but that was spot on.”

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve begun to wonder if anybody can stop the training machine that is Paul Nicholls. His incredible run of wins and production of such top class horses and performances has me keeping a a keen eye on who he enters into the big races at Cheltenham and the Grand National next year – watch this space because I don’t think he’s going to let go of his winning reigns any time soon.

Forpadydeplasterer to Run at Tingle Creek

From the offset, I should say that I am a massive Forpadydeplasterer fan and always, without fail, stick a few quid on him, even if I think the field he’s running against may be putting up some tough competition. This Saturday will be no different when he takes to the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown ready to do battle with the likes of Big Zeb and Well Chief but I really do think that he’s in with a shot, especially if the ground isn’t too heavy on the day.

The 11 year old who will be carrying 11-07 on the day has good form behind him, 12221-22, but the line-up is getting smaller with only five horses still left in it. Tom Cooper, his trainer, said this morning: “The horse left home for Sandown at 2am this morning and the plan is to run unless the ground turns heavy. I will walk the course tomorrow morning, but as long as it isn’t heavy he will take his chance. If it is no worse than soft it won’t be ideal for him, but it will still be a lot better than the ground we currently have in Ireland.”

So it looks like we could be in for some fantastic racing at the weekend and of course if you’re as excited about the prospect as I am then head to Paddy Power Bookmakers where the odds are looking very good at the moment!
