Going into the final sessions, Europe trailed the US by 4 points. In Ryder Cup terms, that’s not just a mountain to climb, it’s an unassailable cliff face. A sports journalist described it as “trying to climb Mt. Everest wearing a T-shirt, cargo shorts and flip-flops.” No one believed it possible that Europe could come back from so far behind. The press had already written the story, and the US sports network ESPN had already published it! ‘Europe Doomed To Defeat‘ wrote one journalist, finishing the article with “Never mind. It’s over. Olazabal can click off the walkie-talkie and take the IFB out of his ear. Time for the Europeans to fire up the private jets and head back home to Florida.”
However, one little nugget of information did make it into the story “Team Europe needs to win eight of the remaining 12 matches to retain the cup.” well, they did that and more, eventually winning the cup outright at the 18th hole, when Tiger Woods conceded to Italian Francesco Molinari, the Miracle Of Medinhah was complete.
