The 2026 World Series is the championship showdown of Major League Baseball (MLB), a best‑of‑seven final played in late October between the top team from each of the two major US leagues.

The MLB regular season runs from late March to late September, with the postseason starting on 29 September.

The World Series itself is scheduled to begin on 23 October 2026, with a possible deciding Game 7 set for 31 October – yes, a potential baseball finale on Halloween!

The series is played in a “2‑3‑2” home‑and‑away pattern: the higher‑seeded team hosts Games 1 and 2, then, if needed, Games 6 and 7, while the lower‑seeded team gets Games 3, 4 and (if needed) 5.

That means if one team is much stronger at home, they will be quite keen to finish things off before too many flights are involved.

How MLB Is Set Up

baseball olympics

MLB has 30 teams split into two leagues: the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), each with three divisions (East, Central, West).

Across the regular season, everybody piles through 162 games, which sounds like a typo until you realise Americans treat weeknights as a fine time for three‑hour sports marathons.

By the end of the regular season, each league has:

  • 3 division winners (best record in each division)
  • 3 “wild card” teams (next best records, regardless of division)

These six per league make up a 12‑team playoff bracket for the whole of MLB.

How the Playoffs Work

The playoffs are basically a mini‑tournament to decide who gets to the World Series.

In each league:

  • The top 2 division winners get a bye straight to the Division Series
  • The 3rd division winner and the 3 wild card teams play in the Wild Card Round

The rounds are:

  • Wild Card Series: best of three games, all played at the higher seed’s ballpark
  • Division Series: best of five games
  • League Championship Series (LCS): best of seven games to decide the AL and NL champions
  • World Series: AL champion vs NL champion, best of seven

If a team wins four games in the World Series before the other side catches up, that’s it – they are champions, and the remaining scheduled games are not played.

So a World Series can end 4–0, 4–1, 4–2, or go all the way to 4–3.

What Actually Happens in a Game

For someone coming from football or cricket, a baseball game is a bit like taking turns to bat forever until the scoreboard gives up.

But here are the basics.

Two teams alternate between batting (trying to score “runs”) and fielding (trying to stop runs and get batters out).

A run is scored when a batter hits the ball and successfully makes it all the way round four “bases” and back to “home plate”.

Each team gets 27 outs in a full nine‑inning game (three outs per inning, nine innings).

After nine innings, whoever has more runs wins; if tied, they play extra innings until someone pulls ahead at the end of an inning.

If you imagine cricket stripped down to only fours and the occasional six and no fielding restrictions, you’re not miles off, though it’s safer not to say that to a hardcore fan.

Who Might Win The 2026 World Series

We don’t know who will win the 2026 World Series yet, but we do know who the bookmakers and US sportsbooks see as early front‑runners.

Going into the 2026 season, the Los Angeles Dodgers are favourites to win what would be a third straight title, with pretty short odds.

Behind them, a cluster of strong teams such as the Phillies, Yankees, Astros, Mariners and Astros sit in the low‑to‑mid teens in the betting markets, signalling that several clubs are seen as realistic contenders rather than one runaway superteam.

Longer shots like the Rockies, White Sox and Nationals sit way out at 500/1, which is the bookmakers’ polite way of saying “anything’s possible, but don’t plan the parade yet.”

Why the World Series Matters

Although the name “World Series” sounds grand, it is essentially the championship of MLB, not a global club tournament like the Champions League.

Still, because MLB attracts much of the world’s top baseball talent, winning the World Series is widely seen as the sport’s ultimate club achievement.

By the time we reach late October 2026, the two finalists will have survived 162 regular‑season games plus three rounds of playoffs, a bit like playing a whole Premier League season and then an extra cup run bolted on the end.

For newcomers, it’s a good moment to drop in: if you watch nothing else all year, the World Series is where the rules, the drama, and the slightly baffling obsession with statistics all come together.
