Can Renegade Give Trainer Todd Pletcher His 3rd Kentucky Derby Win?
The 2026 Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be another classy renewal, and all eyes are on Renegade as he bids to give Todd Pletcher a third victory in the Run for the Roses.
Scheduled for May 2, 2026, at Churchill Downs over 1¼ miles on dirt, the race will feature the best three‑year‑olds currently in training in America and beyond.
This year’s Derby looks incredibly competitive, and while far from being a one‑horse show, Renegade is the horse that currently heads the ante‑post markets in the UK and US after his prep‑race exploits.
He does have serious rivals in Florida Derby winner Commandment and Blue Grass hero Further Ado, and the points leaderboard suggests a well‑balanced field, with horses like The Puma, So Happy, and Emerging Market all bringing Grade 1 or Grade 2 credentials into the mix.
Qualifying for the Derby has followed the now familiar Road to the Kentucky Derby series, where runners accumulate points in key preps such as the Arkansas Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Florida Derby, and Louisiana Derby.
With post positions not yet drawn and the list of possible entries still fluid, everyone is trying to map how this pace scenario might unfold once the field is finalised.
Renegade Has The Momentum

Renegade comes into the Derby with a reasonable, if not perfect, record, but plenty of casual fans will simply open their favourite sportsbook, scroll through the FanDuel bet on Kentucky Derby markets, and see Renegade sitting at or near the top of the board at single‑figure odds.
He is a bay colt foaled in January 2023 who has raced twice since February, winning both starts. His breakout performance came in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, where his fast closing fractions immediately put him on the Derby radar.
He then backed that up in style by powering home in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in March, finishing strongly, winning by four lengths.
Analysts broadly agree that his stamina-laden running style is well-suited to the demands of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. It is no surprise, then, that Renegade is trading around +350 (7/2), with Commandment and Further Ado close behind.
There are, however, a couple of caveats. The Arkansas Derby field was not universally regarded as the deepest of this crop, and Renegade will need to prove he can reproduce that level against a far more stacked line‑up on Derby day.
He will also need a clean trip from possibly a wide gate in a 20‑runner field, which is never guaranteed, no matter how talented the horse.
Todd Pletcher Chasing Derby Win Number Three
Todd Pletcher already has a Hall of Fame résumé, and Renegade gives him a decent chance to add a third Kentucky Derby to the list.
Pletcher won his first Derby in 2010 with Super Saver and added a second in 2017 with Always Dreaming, ending a long sequence of placings and near‑misses in the race.
Over the years, he has saddled a record number of Derby starters, 62 up to but not including the 2026 race, which underlines both his consistency at the top level and his ability to get horses ready for the big day.
Beyond the Derby, his record in the American classics is outstanding. He has won the Belmont Stakes three times, notably with Rags to Riches (the first filly to win that race since 1905), Palace Malice, and Tapwrit.
Pletcher has also captured the Kentucky Oaks with Malathaat and picked up a stack of Grade 1 titles across the calendar, which has helped him secure a record eight Eclipse Awards as North America’s outstanding trainer.
In Triple Crown races alone, Pletcher has six wins, made up of two Kentucky Derbys and four Belmonts, which speaks to his long‑term dominance in this sphere.
As impressive as that is, Pletcher will be more than aware that two wins from 62 starters is a low enough return, especially when you consider that Bob Baffert has won six times from just 24 runners.
So, he will be as keen as anyone to see Renegade convert strong prep form into another blanket of roses. He does have other possible runners, such as Grittiness and Nearly, but it’s Renegade that looks the most likely to bring home the win if everything goes to plan.
Commandment and Further Ado

Renegade might be favourite, but he is far from alone at the top of the market. Commandment, trained by Brad Cox, has earned his spot by winning the Florida Derby and posting a solid overall record that includes multiple wins from a relatively busy three‑year‑old campaign.
Early odds around +500 (5/1) reflect the respect he commands among oddsmakers, and he currently sits high on the points leaderboard, hinting that he brings both class and consistency into the race.
Further Ado, also from the Cox barn, enhanced his reputation with a commanding win in the Blue Grass Stakes, another key Derby prep that often throws up serious contenders.
Like Renegade and Commandment, he is trading around +500 (5/1) in some early books, reinforcing the idea that this Derby has a genuine “big three” on paper before you even factor in promising types such as The Puma, Chief Wallabee, Emerging Market, and So Happy.
Mint Juleps and Roses
With a deep pool of three‑year‑olds, a clear favourite in Renegade, heavyweight trainers like Todd Pletcher and Brad Cox front and centre, and bar staff ready to serve over 125,000 mint juleps, the 2026 Kentucky Derby has all the ingredients of a fantastic renewal.
Whether Renegade can deliver Pletcher a third Derby crown will depend on small margins, but his prep‑race profile gives him every right to be there with a leading chance turning for home.
Fans, bettors, and connections alike now have the countdown firmly on to May 2, when questions about form and hype will finally be settled over 1¼ miles in Louisville.
However the final field shakes out, this looks like a Derby worth getting excited about, and Renegade’s bid to give Todd Pletcher that coveted third victory is one of the most intriguing storylines of the spring.
